Here we explain all parking rules in Zurich: ranking of parking areas, the cheapest parking spots, the functioning of public paid parking zones, EV charging points – and it’s all divided by location.
Street parking in Zürich: zones, prices and when it is free
Checked on 21 September 2026 against the City of Zürich (stadt-zuerich.ch). The city’s tariff text dates from 1994 with amendments to 2016 and allows inflation indexing, so a meter may show a slightly different figure. Sources are linked at the end.
Zürich has about 46,000 public parking spaces on its streets. Two kinds matter to a visitor: blue zone spaces (Blaue Zone, about 32,000 of them, marked with blue lines) and white spaces (weiss markiert, about 11,000 paid and a little over 2,000 free). There is no yellow zone in Zürich, and in District 1, the old town with post code 8001, there are no blue zone spaces at all.
White zone (Weisse Zone): what an hour costs
White spaces are paid at a meter or in an app. The price depends on where you are. In the high tariff zone (the city centre, the centre of Oerlikon and Zürich West) the meters run Monday to Saturday from 9:00 to 20:00 and the tariff has two parts: a control fee of CHF 0.50 per 20 minutes from the first minute, plus CHF 0.50 per 10 minutes once you pass 30 minutes, for the first two hours, and CHF 0.50 per hour after that. Worked out per stay, that is:

Most metered spaces in the centre are limited to two hours; the sign at the space says how long. Outside the high tariff zone a white space costs CHF 0.50 an hour and the paid hours are on the sign. Outside the meter hours, on Sundays and on public holidays, the white spaces in the high tariff zone are free.
Blue zone (Blaue Zone): the parking disc and its hours
In a blue zone space you park with a paper parking disc on the dashboard, set to the next half hour mark after you arrived (arrive at 9:05, set 9:30). Electronic discs are not allowed. Monday to Saturday, 8:00 to 11:30 and 13:30 to 18:00, you may stay one hour. Arrive between 11:30 and 13:30 and you may stay until 14:30; arrive between 18:00 and 8:00 and you may stay until 9:00 the next morning. Between 19:00 and 7:59 no disc is needed as long as you leave before 8:00. On Sundays and public holidays there is no time limit unless a sign under the blue zone sign says so.
Public holidays the city counts: 1 and 2 January, Good Friday, Easter Monday, Ascension Day, 1 May, Whit Monday, 1 August, 25 and 26 December.
Day pass for the blue zone (Tageskarte)
A visitor who needs longer than an hour in a blue zone can buy a day permit for CHF 15 (a block of ten for CHF 150), valid in every blue zone in the city for the day. Tradespeople pay CHF 30 a day. The permit is electronic, nothing to print and display. Residents who are registered in a paid zone can apply for an Anwohnerparkkarte for CHF 300 a year, which allows unlimited parking in the blue zone of their own post code district, though it does not guarantee a free space.
How to pay at a white space
The city is replacing all its meters with digital ones between late 2025 and mid 2027: you type in your number plate, there is no paper ticket, and you can pay in cash (Swiss francs) or with a contactless bank card. Nearly 80 percent of payments go through an app: the city accepts EasyPark and Parkingpay, and TWINT through Parkingpay. The QR codes on the meters were removed because of scams, so you enter the zone number from the sign yourself. Paid time cannot be topped up in the app, only shortened. An electronic receipt is available for 48 hours at ticket.prestopark.com.
Fines
Overstaying the disc, setting it wrong, moving it without driving away, or not paying at a white space is a fixed penalty under Swiss federal rules. The city does not publish the amounts on its website.
Park and ride, and the city’s own garages
The city’s park and ride garage is Hardturm, next to the A1, with 270 spaces, a 2.20 m height limit and a tram stop outside (lines 8 and 17). It costs CHF 1.50 for the first hour, CHF 3.50 for two hours, CHF 7.50 for four, with a daily cap of CHF 28; at night (22:00 to 6:00) the first hour is CHF 1.00. The city also runs ten garages with about 3,400 spaces (Hauptbahnhof, Urania, Hohe Promenade, Helvetiaplatz and others); how many spaces are free right now is shown at pls-zh.ch.
Street or a reserved space?
For a short stop in the evening or on a Sunday, the street is often free and that is the honest answer. On a weekday in the centre, two hours at a meter cost CHF 7.50 and you have to move the car afterwards. Is street parking in Zürich free on Sundays?
In the high tariff zone the meters only run Monday to Saturday 9:00 to 20:00, so white spaces there are free on Sundays and public holidays. Blue zone spaces have no time limit on Sundays unless a sign says otherwise. Outside the centre, check the sign at the space.
How much is one hour of parking in Zürich city centre?
CHF 3.00 at a white space in the high tariff zone (CHF 1.00 for half an hour, CHF 7.50 for two hours). Outside the high tariff zone, CHF 0.50 an hour.
How long can I stay in a blue zone in Zürich?
One hour with the disc, Monday to Saturday between 8:00 and 11:30 and between 13:30 and 18:00. Over lunch and overnight the disc buys you more (until 14:30 and until 9:00). Longer stays need a CHF 15 day permit or a resident’s permit.
Which parking apps work in Zürich?

Paid parking spaces in Zurich:
Blue Zones
You can park in the “blue Zones” or blue parking areas in Zurich. It is free for a specific amount of time, usually 1 hour, depending on the time you arrive.
The general rules are if you park on workdays, Monday to Saturday, between 8:00 and 11:30 and between 13:30 and 18:00 you can park in the blue zones for one hour.
between 11:30 and 13:30, you can stay till 14:30
between 18:00 and 8:00, you can park until 9:00
Please note: a new parking-permit ordinance (Parkkartenverordnung) is being phased in during 2026, so detailed blue-zone rules may change.
❌ You mustn’t extend the parking time simply by moving the disc forward but not the car! If you do need to park for longer you actually have to leave the parking bay and then park again (in new space) – otherwise you may be in for a fine!
❌ You can’t reserve and guarantee a free spot.
❌ Parking lots are unguarded and there is pedestrian traffic around.
❌ You must have a parking disc.
You can be fined for:
- Your parking disc not being completely visible (it should be displayed in the front windscreen by the driver’s seat)
- You haven’t marked the time on the disc clearly
- You’ve exceed the allowed parking time
- You’ve changed the arrival time but not moved your car
If you live in an area with blue parking bays you can apply to purchase an unrestricted parking permit (‘Parkkarte’).
White zones
Parking in the white zone is also limited. The maximum duration is indicated by road markings and you need to pay at the closest meter.
Some white bays are marked as “Besucher” bays for shops or apartments and you are entitled to park in these places if you are visiting those places.

Yellow Zones
These are private or reserved for companies and may only be used by them or their clients and guests.
Yellow markings with crosses mean no parking and yellow lines by the side of the road mean no waiting at the roadside. Parking on main roads outside of towns is prohibited.
Paid parking is the norm in Switzerland
especially around popular places like rail stations, hotels and town centers. Even as a hotel guest, you often need to pay for parking separately. Count on CHF 10 to 50 per day. Parking in the larger cities is quite expensive: garage first hours in Zurich typically cost CHF 2.00 to 4.00. Rates are very dependent on location, number of hours, indoor or outdoor parking.
Paying is done in several ways:
- Hotel guests can pay for their parking costs during the check-out procedure.
- In public parking garages you’ll find machines. Before you leave, you’ll have to enter the parking ticket you received when driving in, and you’ll pay in cash or with debit/credit card.
- On many parking lots you’ll find parking meters. The city’s meters are digital: you enter your plate number and pay by card, coins or mobile app. There is no paper ticket to display and no bay number to enter.
- A growing number of parking lots can be paid with mobile apps, linked to your credit card or bank account. You’ll have to enter your plate number and parking duration. Apps used in Zurich are EasyPark, Parkingpay and TWINT.

Whole day ticket
Parking the car in business time. If you are in the city for just a few days, you can use the guest day permit. The cost is still 15 francs per day (a block of 10 costs CHF 150), and you can stay in the blue zone the whole day. Since 8 April 2026 the permit is digital: you buy it online for your plate number and nothing is placed under the windshield. Note that Kreis 1 (8001) has no blue-zone spaces at all. However, this does not guarantee a free parking space on the street! you can still circle the city, wasting time and producing unnecessary CO2.
